Our Video Guru on the Super Bowl Ads
Hey everyone. Stellar Blue’s video guru Andy here. Statistically speaking most if not all of you watched the “Big Game” last night, and regardless of who you rooted for, I think the big topic everyone always talks about the day after is the Ads. There were a few good contenders mixed in with the promos for the Winter Olympics and movie trailers, but my personal favorite was the Tide campaign.
The ad started out innocently enough with Stranger Things star David Harbour driving down an empty road at sunset. “Just your typical… Car Ad,” he says echoing the audience’s initial reaction to what’s become a trope surrounding this event. But then he flips the trope on its head by rifling through a bunch of other seemingly standard, formulaic advertising recipes before finally coming out and stating that it’s a Tide ad.
Personally, this is why it worked for me. It’s unconventional by playing with conventions, original by flirting with unoriginality. It’s brilliant. What’s more is that each segment that makes up the ad looks and feels different until Harbour shows up and reassures us it’s still a tide ad. Different lighting, camera movements, music, everything looks like its own ad until you’re told it’s still a Tide ad. Finally, it ends on a strong tagline of “Does this make everything a Tide Ad? Watch and See”.
Anyway, that’s why it stuck out to me, but what was your favorite ad last night? Feel free to comment below or watch some of our Stellar videos here.
